"What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic?"

Upper Cervical Chiropractic, also known as NUCCA, is a different procedure than standard chiropractors use, it focuses directly with the cause of your misalignment, which is your body’s imbalance that is caused by the position of your head on your the atlas, which medically known as C1.

Your C1 and C2 are much different than the rest of your spine’s bones. For example, they don’t interlock like your other 31 vertebrae bones do, instead they are only held together by muscles, ligaments and the weight of your head. This upper cervical design is what gives you the mobility in your head to turn far to the right and far to the left.



The goal is to correct your alignment so your head sit straight on your body. Upper Cervical Doctors use precision instead of force, without the cracking, twisting or body manipulation that standard chiropractors use. Instead an Upper Cervical Doctor performs a gentle procedure with their hands to lightly move the atlas back to it’s natural position, so your head will remain balanced. This procedure allows your back muscles to relax and the rest of your spine to fall back into place.



An Upper Cervical doctor goes to standard chiropractic school, but must complete additional years of schooling before they get certified to practice the upper cervical procedure. It’s one of the reason that this procedure is not as widely known as standard chiropractic care, there are not as many doctors that are able to perform it. Though more and more doctors are opening practices that specialize in upper cervical care.
